Hazzan David Acker is a member of the Cantors’ Assembly. At Mishkan Shalom he has taught fifth and sixth grades and has enjoyed directing a Hanukah play and Purim rap. His b’nei mitzvah students have fun experiencing both mastery and deep understanding of Torah and prayer. Cantor David believes a successful classroom experience taps into students’ sense of pertinence and fun.
David holds a Master in Cantorial Studies and Jewish Music from Gratz College as well as music degrees from Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music and Swarthmore College. He is currently a candidate for a Master in Jewish Education at Gratz.
Singing holds for him the potential for us all to experience the essence of life- breath and body, music, prayer, community and joy. He is drawn to synagogue work, because within it he can experience the whole gamut of Jewish life: prayer, education, b’nei mitzvah preparation, lifecycle and community.
Of late, these have become ever more important as he and his partner, Bob, members of Mishkan Shalom for more than five years, embark on a parenting adventure with their daughter, Miriam Sofia.
