Romero Interfaith Center
Mishkan Shalom, along with St. Vincent's Parish (Germantown) and Tabernacle United Church (West Philadelphia), is a constituent congregation in the local Romero Interfaith Center (RIC), founded in 1990 in response to the struggle of rural people in El Salvador for basic human rights and economic, political and social justice during the country's devastating Civil War (1979 - 91).
Coming out of the original Sanctuary Movement, and as a member of U.S.-El Salvador Sister Cities (USESSC), RIC continues to support our sister city of Las Anonas de Santa Cruz in the province of San Vicente, to ensure the values of dignity, justice and peace exemplified by the assassinated Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Interfaith Community Building Group
Members of Mishkan Shalom and St. Vincent de Paul Parish founded the Interfaith Community Building Group (ICBG) in 1997 and annually work collaboratively with other groups and people in under-resourced communities on their construction projects.
The group has helped build or re-build a burned African-American church in Mississippi; a community center, church, houses and latrines in El Salvador (through RIC and USESSC); a post-Katrina church in New Orleans; and post-Sandy church buildings in Rockaway Park, NY. In addition, the ICBG has undertaken numerous Philadelphia projects, including a community Y; South Indian church; low-income houses; a mosque school; a women's shelter; and -- for Mishkan Shalom -- a pond and shelving for the Library and vestibule/Main Sanctuary spaces.
